Soccer fever grips Russia a month ahead of World Cup

The Luzhniki Stadium, the venue which will stage the opening match on June 14 and the final on July 15, hosted a “Russia Loves Soccer” event over the weekend.

On Monday, the local organising committee chairman Arkady Dvorkovich said that preparations are in their final stages and they just need to add the finishing touches before being ready to welcome the world to Russia. Landscaping and additional security systems are all that is left to add at some of the newly-built stadiums.

Schools in the 11 host cities also marked the one-month point by holding “soccer lessons” and inviting soccer personalities to play a match and to speak about the tournament.

Moscow International School no.1498 welcomed LOC chairman Dvorkovich and retired Russian soccer player Alexei Smertin.

Smertin, who is now the Russian Football Union’s anti-discrimination inspector, took part in a soccer match held between some of the school’s students.
