Udaipur : Dheeraj Gakhreja, a 42-year old Udaipur based businessman was killed in a shootout between two rival gangs in Bangkok on Sunday night. Dheeraj worked as a franchise for a private insurance company and was part of a group of 400 Indians who were selected for the foreign trip as a reward for achieving the company’s target.
Dheeraj had gone to Bangkok with a friend on October 3 and was to return on the night he was killed. A pall of gloom descended among the Sindhi community which is in a shock after getting the tragic news of the youth’s death. Dheeraj’s family members have left for Bangkok, they will reach with the body in Delhi on Tuesday afternoon and the funeral will be held at 4 pm here after they arrive Udaipur” PratapRai Chugh, Dheeraj’s uncle told Udaipur Kiran. Dheeraj is survived by his mother, wife and two children- a son and a daughter, His younger brother helped him in the franchise business, family sources claimed. The boys had been working from quite a young age after the demise of their father more than 10 years ago.
According to sources, Dheeraj and his group members had gone to a restaurant for dinner on Sunday night. They were waiting at the parking lot near the Centara Watergate Pavillion hotel in Ratchathewi district, where tourist coaches were parked. While they were there, two groups of young men emerged from a nearby snooker club into an alley just beside the parking lot, they began a fight that quickly escalated into an armed battle.
According to eyewitnesses, around 20 men armed with pistols, knives and sticks ran from the club into the street, he said, adding that three men also opened fire. Dheeraj sustained bullet shot on his abdomen while his friend was injured on his hand. Dheeraj and Keovongsa Thonekeo, 28, a Lao tourist, died at a hospital where other injured are undergoing treatment.
