Kom was declared the winner after all five judges scored in her favour following an intense bout at the Indira Gandhi Sports Complex in the capital. Kom, who is gunning for her sixth world championship, will now take on her Chinese counterpart Yu Wu in the last eight of the competition on Tuesday.
Earlier in the day, young Indian boxer Manisha Maun sent reigning world champion Dina Zholaman of Kazakhstan packing with another authoritative win in 54kg to place herself a step away from grabbing a maiden worlds medal. The 20-year-old Manisha won a 5-0 unanimous verdict against her more experienced rival in a pre-quarterfinal bout.
Lovlina Borgohain booked her berth in the quarter finals. In the 69 Kg category, Lovlina defeated Atheyna Bylon of Panama by unanimous verdict.
Bhagyabati Kachari also moved into the quarter finals of the world boxing championships. In 81 kg category Bhagyabati Kachari defeated Irina-Nicoletta of Germany 4-1.
