JEE Main 2017: An In-depth Paper Analysis

Total 1,186,454 candidates appeared for JEE Main 2017 which was held on April 02, 2017 in offline and on 08 and 09, 2017 in online mode. However, only 9,784 candidates could secure admission in various IITs. According to student and experts’ feedback, we’ve prepared a JEE Main 2017 in-depth paper analysis to facilitate candidates aspiring to appear for the exam in 2018.

Paper Analysis

The experts summarized that there were a lot of similarities between the question papers of JEE Main 2017 and 2016. Overall, JEE Main 2017 question paper was moderately difficult but was very lengthy. The Mathematics section this year was toughest as compared to previous years. Also, questions from some subjects were a little more time consuming than that in 2016. However, most questions were based on Class 12th syllabus.


The difficulty level and length of this section was moderate. Overall, Physics section was based on fundamental concepts. Students found it easier as compared to that in 2016. There were more numerical based or calculative questions as compared to theoretical ones. Total 19 questions were picked from class 12th syllabus while 11 were from Class 11th.

11 questions were asked from Mechanics, 8 from Electrodynamics, 3 from Thermodynamics and Kinetic Theory, 6 questions from Modern Physics and Nuclear Physics while only 2 from Optics and Wave Optics, which was surprising for many students. Only 17% questions were asked from Semiconductors, Modern Physics and Communication Systems. Most of the questions were asked from the NCERT syllabus.


Based on experts and students feedback, the Chemistry paper in JEE Main 2017 was said to be the easiest one than Physics and Mathematics. The difficulty curve of the Chemistry paper was pretty much similar to that of 2016. More theoretical questions were asked rather than numerical ones, making it easier for candidates to solve the paper in provided time.

Out of the 30 questions in Chemistry section, 17 were from class 12th syllabus and 13 from class 11th. The weightage given to questions from Physical, Organic and Inorganic Chemistry was almost equal. Total 8 questions were from Organic Chemistry, 11 from Physical Chemistry and 11 from Inorganic Chemistry.

Eight questions of Organic Chemistry were taken from class 12th while two were from class 11th. In Physical Chemistry, 7 questions were taken from 12th class and 4 from 11th class. In Organic Chemistry, 4 questions were from 12th class and 5 questions from 11th class syllabus. Most of the questions in the Chemistry section were asked from NCERT syllabus.


The Mathematics paper was found to be the most difficult of all three subjects. It was quite lengthy, even when the comprehension level of the questions was easier as compared with that of 2015. Students reviewed that the questions were simple formulae based, but required a lot of calculations, much more than expected.

Out of the 30 questions in this section, 20 were asked from Class 12th syllabus and 10 from Class 11th. The paper had 15 questions from Algebra, 3 from Trigonometry, 6 from Calculus, 3 from Vector Algebra and 3 from Conics. Almost all the questions in this section were asked from NCERT syllabus.

Impact of Tougher Pattern

JEE Advanced cutoff has been declared and it is much lower than expected. Cut off for unreserved category dropped from 100 in 2016 to 81 in 2017 while it was expected to range between 95 and 105.

The same trend was observed for other categories as well. For instance, the cutoffs of SC, ST and OBC categories also dropped from 52, 48 and 70 respectively in 2016 to 32, 27 and 49 in 2017. The experts and students who appeared in the exam stated that the reason behind lower cutoffs was the difficult Mathematics paper.
