‘Kalaignar’ M Karunanidhi laid to rest next to mentor Annadurai at Marina Beach

With this the pillar of Tamil Nadu politics bid adieu to this world. As mortal remains of M Karunanidhi was buried at Marina Beach in Chennai, it marked the end of an era.

Karunanidhi's children Stalin, MK Selvam, Alagiri and Kanimozi and other family members and Dravid leaders were present during the last rites.

Leaders from across political spectrum were also present. Besides thousands of followers decended at the venue to get the last glimpse of their beloved leader, the atmosphere was somber. Family and folowers all were in teary eyes.

Earlier, Karunanidhi's mortal remains were kept at Rajaji Hall so that people could pay their last respects to the departed leader.  His mortal remains was wrapped in tri colour.

His coffin read- 'one who worked hard without any rest, now rests in peace'

Family, friends, supporters & leaders across political spectrum gathered around the  mortal remains. People chanted slogans of their beloved leader.

Tamil Nadi Chief Minister Palaniswami, Deputy CM O. Paneerselvam, Lok Sabha deputy speaker M Thambidurai, ministers of state, AMMK leader and RK Nagar MLA TTV Dhinakaran, Superstar Rajnikanth and his family, actor shivkartikeyan and others paid homage to the leader.

Congress President Rahul Gandhi, Akhilesh Yadav, Tejaswi Yadav, Chandrababu Naidu and other leaders were also present on the occasion. Kerala Governor P Sadasivam, CM Pinarayi Vijayan, Karnataka CM HD Kumaraswamy, Telangana CM Chandrasekhar Rao also arrived for last glimpses of the iconic leader.

The growing crowd outside Rajaji hall created stampede like situtaion. A few people were also injured. MK Stalin appealed for peace.

In the afternoon, the mortal remains of the late leader -covered with flowers and garland was carried in a funeral procession to Marina beach. A sea of humanity followed the procession to its destination.

Earlier in the day, Madras High Court cleared the path for the burial to take place at Marina Beach. A division bench of the court comprising Acting Chief Justice H G Ramesh and S S Sundar passed the order on a petition filed by the DMK at a special hearing.

The court said: There was no legal impediment to allowing the burial. Tamil Nadu government is directed to provide a place for a memorial within the precincts of the Anna Memorial.

A soon as the court order came, thousands of DMK supported chanted their late leaders name. Meanwhile hightened security arrangement was made in the state.

A public holiday was declared in the state in honour of M Karuna nidhi and streets appeared desertd in many parts of the state. Karunanidhi was buried with full state honours.

He will continue live forever in the hearts of his follower their beloved leader.
