PM Modi dedicates to nation National Police Memorial

Tributes from an emotional Prime minister…tributes from a grateful nation…tributes to unsung police martyrs…the occasion…Police commemoration day. A day when the nation remembers police braves who laid down their lives in the line of duty.

Observed on October 21 every year, the Police Commemoration Day remembers the sacrifices of ten policemen who died in Chinese firing along the border in 1959. They were later cremated with full police honours at Hot Springs in North Eastern Ladakh.

Since 1947, 34,844 police personnel have been martyred, with 424 losing their lives this year. Many of these brave lives were lost in the fight against terrorism in Kashmir, Punjab, Assam, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram and LWE-affected regions of the country. Prime Minister took the salute at this commemorative parade.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi also interacted with heroes of the Hot Springs incident. He announced a bravery award in the memory of Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose for martyrs involved in disaster management.

Next it was the turn of the inauguration of a National police Museum dedicated to the memory of martyred police personnel. A part of the Memorial, the Museum depicts the history of police and takes visitors through the journey of police personnel from pledge to eternity.

The foundation stone for this National Police Memorial was laid by LK Advani in 2002, when he was Home Minister in the Vajpayee government. But the UPA government dragged its feet over the project. It was only after the Modi government took charge that work picked up pace. Prime Minsiter hit out at the previous governments for the unnecessary delay in the construction of this memorial.

A grateful nation paid tributes to all the policemen and policewomen martyred in the line of duty with the opening of this grand memorial and Museum.  With this befitting accolade, Prime Minister Narendra Modi led India in saluting not just the martyrs, but their families as well on Police commemoration day.
