Udaipur : The accused lived in Raigar basti and had been unemployed for more than an year. No one in the locality has anything bad against him, residents says he was weird at times but no one can believe he could do something so inhumane like this.
Neighbors said he did well in the marble trading and earned enough but he was in love with a girl who had physical relation with a muslim man. His close friends claim that Shambhulal was much insecure as he felt the girl would elope again with her lover. Neighbours also said that he had been beaten up by some bengali labourers after he lead a group of people to West Bengal to bring back a minor girl who had eloped with a muslim man. Two similar incidents of elopement had taken place in the basti some 2-3 years ago, people said. In one case, a hindu girl had married a muslim boy and lived in Baghpura area of the city. ” These incidents had laid an effect on his mind and he sounded whimsical and philosophical at times. He would ask us not to support reservation. At times we felt he was not normal and something was going inside his head” a neighbour claimed.
After ‘notebandi’ his business badly suffered and instead of looking for other job opportunities, he got addicted to ‘gaanja’ and alcohol and spent hours on internet. His friends also claim there was something abnormal in his behaviour. ” He went for swimming every morning to Rajsamand lake and he would take his kids always with him. He was insecure and much protective for his children. He had mentioned many times that people may harm his kids so he took them where he went, specially his younger daughter Kittu who accompanied her father every where” a close friend from the colony said. Reportedly, Shambulal had got a tatoo made on his chest of Kittu holding a globe in her hand. Community men also said that Shambulal was under much debts and owned some 1.5 lakh rupees to people. His wife Sushila did petty labour work to earn a living. Shambhulal and his two brothers, their wives and kids too lived with him and one of his brother’s wife being a government servant gave a monthly help of 3 thousand rupees to Sushila for looking after her kids.
“We cannot believe he has done something like this. He is a soft hearted person and even under extreme financial difficulties, he would never yell on family members, He would not allow anyone of us to scold the children for their mistakes” said one of his brother’s wife. Even after the murder, Shambulal roamed on his scooty with the two minors. He took them to Kelwa, 15 kilometers away from Rajsamand where his wife’s relatives lived. Shambhulal had bought a ‘pawwa’ desi liquor with him which he drank before taking dinner. The relatives who were surprised to see him with the two children asked forhis sudden visit but Shambulal lied to them that he had taken Kittu to a temple in Amet and were late to return home. So to avoid the cold, they thought of staying there. They believed him without a slightest idea of the ghory act he had committed few hours ago. On Thursday morning, while police forces were looking for him, Shambulal had been quite normal and he woke up like any other day. He took the children to the market and brought chips for them. He was on his way to the temple when the police caught him.
